Prof. Dr. A.F.M. Saiful Amin

Dr. Saiful Amin belongs to the Department of Civil Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He graduated from BUET in 1996 as a Civil Engineer and completed his MSc studies in 1998 from the same University. In presenting Undergraduate and MSc dissertations, he studied thick shell finite elements and modeled the structural response of helicoidal stairs via thick shell finite elements. Finally an award of a Japanese Government Scholarship took him to Japan in 1998 to undertake doctoral studies. The Saitama University, Japan awarded him with a PhD degree in 2001 for the dissertation titled “Constitutive Modeling for Strain-rate Dependency of Natural and High Damping Rubbers”.

Coming originally from civil engineering discipline, Dr. Amin specialized himself in the fields of structural engineering; now more specifically in structural mechanics, constitutive modelling with finite strain theories, experimental observation of constitutive behaviour and finite element implementation of constitutive models. In recent years, his works appear/ being cited in different International Journals e.g. Nature, Mechanics of Materials, Journal of Engineering Mechanics (ASCE), International Journal of Plasticity, Journal of Testing and Evaluation (ASTM), ZAMM Zeitschrift fur Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, European Journal of Mechanics: Part A: Solids, Acta Mechanica, Applied Numerical Mathematics, Computational Mechanics, Computational Materials Science, International Journal of Mechanical Science, Springer Proceedings in Physics, Smart Materials and Structures,  Journal of Elastomers and Plastics, Society for Experimental Mechanics - SEM Annual Conference and Exposition on Experimental and Applied Mechanics, Journal of Material Engineering and Performance, International Journal of Solids and Structures, European Polymer Journal, Mecanique et Industries, Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, Journal of Constructional Steel Research, Archives of Mechanics, etc. The long list shows the application of the fundamental research in diversified areas.

In recent years, Dr. Amin expanded his research activities in repair and retrofitting of structures with fiber reinforced polymers, cement chemistry, curing behavior of concrete, development of measurement techniques, forensic investigation, non-destructive testing and bridge dynamics for pedestrian movement. See further details in Research pages.

Apart from the BUET responsibilities, Dr. Amin held visiting professorships for two terms, e.g. in 2004 at University of Kassel, Germany and in 2007 at University of Federal Armed Forces Munich, Germany under the sponsorship of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Dr. Amin maintains close collaboration with various professional bodies and strives to contribute towards improvement of professional qualities of individual and professional bodies as well. Specific mention of his involvement in the capacity of Journal editor and proceedings is worth to cite. This particular input helps Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh to focus and present itself among many other professional organizations throughout the globe. Besides, at present, Dr. Amin holds the responsibility of General Secretary of Bangladesh Group of IABSE.

Dr. Amin was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 29 September 1971. He visited 19 countries either as a researcher/professional or as a tourist. He is married and father of a daughter.
